While it’s said that Delorean had ~3 cars painted upon entering America, this is not one of those cars. It was originally used as a dealer demonstrator in 1981 , and then the dealership had it painted red with black stripes along the sides in 1982 before selling it in March. It was parked in ‘96 and sat until someone bought it in 2017. That guy touched up the paint and stripes and restored it mechanically, so aside from some minor wear on the seats, it’s practically good as new.

I gotta say, I really like it in this color. I know the bare stainless steel look is super iconic, but I always wondered what it would look like in actual color. And it looks GOOOOOOD. It just wears that color so well.

I like it more than the bare steel. And from what I understand, they have parts enough to build new ones, so getting new old stock to repair is easy. You're right, it's probably good as new

That looks pretty damn good, and the fact that it has documented history from the beginning is great, since painted DeLoreans are often hiding accident damage.

Plus, with it painted, the front bumper actually matches the color of the body for once!

These cars need an engine swap, they are pretty bad in every way . I vote for the original Taurus SHO motor. Looks the part on a bare metal one.

I’m led to believe the majority of painted cars are dealer commissioned. Still, they do look pretty cool.

The first painted one I saw was yellow, suited it better than red for me

That’s one of those things that sounds like a good idea, but is actually a terrible idea mainly due to parts/service.

A better engine would be the Ford 3.5L or 3.7L.  Or the Chrysler 3.6L Pentastar would be a better choice as well.

I do like. I saw a show once where they were fixing up one that had been painted. They stripped the paint and found… bondo! It

No actually I was finishing hastily. Anyways in that case  they found it had been painted to cover up body damage.

Ah. I have heard that’s a common reason for Deloreans to get painted. Luckily, this one’s history is documented so it’s safe to assume it’s not hiding anything.

Terrible ideas are the best kind though. I mean listen to this thing. Perfect for the Delorean, mean sounds to match its mean looks without compromising the cars basic purpose in life which is to look much faster than it actually is.

Funny how a coat of red paint with the boxy lines makes me think immediately of Bertone and Detomaso.
